PALESTINE SUBCOMMITTEE CONSIDERS BOUNDARIES AND ADMINISTRATION OF JERUSALEM<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

The Subcommittee convened in public this morning at 11:30 a.m. under the chairmanship of MR. KSAWERY PRUSZYNSKI (Poland) and gave consideration to the Working paper on the Special International Regime of the City of Jerusalem. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Subcommittee left for later consideration the question as to whether the City of Jerusalem should be placed under the authority of the Trusteeship Council, the Security Council or a Special Commission elected by the General Assembly. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>It discussed and approved, with a few amendments, the paragraphs of the Working Paper relating to the Boundaries of the City, the Governor and Administrative Staff, Local Autonomy and Measures of Security.  On this latter matter the Subcommittee by 6 votes to 1 with 2 abstentions, decided that “for maintenance of law and order and for the protection of the Holy Places and religious buildings and sites in the City of Jerusalem, the Governor shall organize a police force of adequate strength the members of which shall be recruited outside of Palestine.”  The provision that such a force should be neither Arab nor Jew was dropped.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>The Subcommittee then approved the paragraphs on the Administration of Justice, the Economic Union and the International Regime.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The Subcommittee adjourned at 1:30 p.m. and will reconvene this afternoon at 3:00 p.m.<\/p><\/div>\n
