Elena Ponomareva-Piquier, the Chief of Public Relations Section of the Information Service, briefed journalists about developments concerning Afghanistan, the Middle East and the Second Review Conference of States Parties to the Convention on Conventional Weapons (CCW), which concludes its work today.<\/p><\/div>\n

The General Assembly yesterday adopted a resolution supporting the establishment of a monitoring mechanism in the occupied territories. This action followed a meeting of the Security Council on Saturday, which failed to adopt a draft resolution, which would have encouraged the establishment of a monitoring mechanism. The resolution was adopted by the General Assembly by 124 votes in favour, 6 against, with 25 abstentions. By 133 votes in favour to 4 against, with 16 abstentions, the General Assembly also called upon Israel to comply with the Fourth Geneva Convention, which covers the protection of civilians during wartime. <\/p><\/div>\n
