The Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights today appointed three eminent persons as members of a human rights inquiry commission to gather and compile information on the violation of human rights by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territories and to provide the Commission with its conclusions and recommendations with the aim of preventing a repetition of such violations.<\/p><\/div>\n

Ambassador Shambhu Ram Simkhada said John Dugard (South Africa), of Leiden University, Holland; Richard Falk (United States of America), a Professor of International Law at Princeton University, USA; and Kamal Hussein (Bangladesh), former Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, had been appointed on the basis of their independence and objectivity following wide ranging consultations with the Bureau of the Commission on Human Rights as well as with regional groups.<\/p><\/div>\n

He said the inquiry commission is expected to begin its work soon.<\/p><\/div>\n

The inquiry commission was set up in accordance with resolution S-5\/1 entitled "Grave and massive violations of the human rights of the Palestinian people by Israel", adopted by the Commission on Human Rights at its Fifth Special Session and endorsed by the Economic and Social Council in its decision 2000\/311 on November 22, 2000. <\/p><\/div>\n

The inquiry commission is expected to complement the various efforts being undertaken towards establishing a just and lasting peace in the Middle East by contributing to the cause of promotion and protection of human rights.<\/p><\/div>\n
