{"id":212894,"date":"2004-11-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T20:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=212894"},"modified":"2019-03-12T20:31:12","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T20:31:12","slug":"auto-insert-212894","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-212894\/","title":{"rendered":"Secretary-General statement on the death of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahayan, President of the United Arab Emirates."},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:center;font-size:12pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESMAN FOR THE SECRETARY-GENERAL<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:12pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">The Secretary-General learned with profound sadness yesterday of the death of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahayan, President of the United Arab Emirates.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:12pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Sheikh Zayed al-Nahayan was a most distinguished statesman, who had led the UAE since its formation in 1971.&nbsp;&nbsp;He devoted tireless efforts to building the state and nation, and in so doing, earned the respect of the population for his wisdom, his generosity, and his achievements in constructing a prosperous economy. <\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:12pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Sheikh Zayed&#8217;s wisdom, strong belief in diplomacy and generous assistance to developing countries also won him wide renown outside his own country &#8211; in the Islamic world and even further afield.&nbsp;&nbsp;And he was a friend of the United Nations, who sought always to strengthen relations between the Organization and his country.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:12pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">The Secretary-General wishes to convey his deep condolences to the family of the late President, and to the Government and people of the United Arab Emirates.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:12pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\" style=\"white-space:pre;
