2. CONSIDERATION OF A<\/span> SUPPLEMENT<\/a> TO THE <\/span>TWELFTH PROGRESS REPORT<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The CHAIRMAN drew attention to his draft statement before the Commission.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Mr. BARCO (United States) pointed out that it might be useful if the latest information on the progress in the Commission’s activities were made available to the Ad Hoc<\/i> Political Committee. It was true that the item before the Committee had not been submitted by any of the delegations represented on the Commission, nor by the Commission itself, and therefore would not be desirable to have the Committee conduct its debate on the basis of a report by the Commission. He had therefore suggested that the Chairman of the Commission might make a statement in the Committee at the outset of the debate.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Mr. BARAN (Turkey) had just received the draft statement and had had no opportunity to study it. While he agreed as the usefulness, making supplementary information available to the Ad Hoc<\/i> Political Committee, he was not sure how or when that should be done.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The CHAIRMAN felt that the Commission should not intervene in the debate in the Committee unless requested to, since it would risk appearing as a defendant, and would be placed in an impossible position. It would be easy to achieve the aim of a statement, however, by publishing a supplementary report.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

In the course of further discussion, it was <\/span>agreed<\/i><\/span> that the draft statement should be altered and serve as a <\/span>supplement<\/a> to the Commission’s <\/span>Twelfth Progress Report<\/a> to the Secretary-General. After some drafting changes had been made, the Commission <\/span>approved<\/i><\/span> the text of the <\/span>supplementary report<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
