Israel\/Occupied Territories: Amnesty International calls for immediate release of journalist Riad Ali<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Amnesty International calls for the immediate release of Riad Ali, a CNN journalist who was abducted by a group of armed Palestinian men in Gaza City on Monday 27 September and whose whereabouts remain unknown. <\/p>\n

"Riad Ali must not be harmed and must be released immediately. Such actions can never be justified, under any circumstances," Amnesty International said.<\/p>\n

The organization also calls on the Palestinian Authority to exert its utmost effort to promptly secure Riad Ali's release and to ensure that he is not harmed, and to bring to justice those responsible for his abduction. <\/p>\n

According to the information currently available, Riad Ali, an Israeli citizen from the Druze community, was abducted by a group of armed Palestinian men while he was in the company of two other CNN employees, a reporter and a camera operator, both US nationals. The gunmen approached the three and asked specifically for Riad Ali and when he identified himself they forced him into a car at gunpoint and drove off to an unknown location. No Palestinian armed group is known to have claimed responsibility for the abduction so far.<\/p>\n

Such actions violate international law. The abduction of a journalist constitutes a clear attack on freedom of expression and information, cornerstones of human rights law.
