MIDDLE EAST PEACE PROCESS<\/strong> – Council Conclusions<\/p><\/div>\n

"The Council recalled that in Aqaba there was a clear commitment to end terrorism and violence and full support for the Roadmap. Those choosing another way will face consequences.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Terrorist activities must cease immediately. Hamas and other groups must therefore accept the offer of the Palestinian Authority, promoted by Egypt and accept a total ceasefire with the objective of allowing the immediate and faithful implementation of the Quartet Roadmap.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Hamas Izz al-Din al-Qassem (the so-called military wing) is already on the EU list of proscribed organizations for asset freeze. The Council is now urgently examining the case for wider action against Hamas fund raising.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

The Council called also on Israel to take action to restore trust and abstain from any punitive measures, including extra-judicial killings.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

The Council underlined the need for countries of the region to be constructive in the fight against terrorism. Tackling the direct or indirect financing of terrorism remains a priority for the EU.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Finally, the Council expressed its support to the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to make rapid progress on security, paving the way to the two states solution. "<\/p><\/div>\n

In the margins of the Council, the EU Troika met with the Palestinian Authority (Minister Shaath) and with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mr. Maher.<\/p><\/div>\n

Over lunch, Ministers had an exchange of views on the succession of the EU Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process, Mr. Moratinos.<\/p><\/div>\n

IRAQ<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Ministers also discussed the situation in Iraq following adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1483 and the appointment of UNSC Special Representative Sergio Viera de Mello, and in the perspective of further stabilisation and reconstruction efforts in the country. Ministers invited the Commission to pursue possible options for EU contributions to reconstruction. Discussions on Iraq will continue in Thessaloniki.<\/p><\/div>\n
