9 – 13 January 2005<\/u><\/strong>
\n<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, will visit the Middle East region between Sunday, 9 January, and Thursday, 13 January, 2005<\/u>. The visit will underscore the EU's political engagement in the region, in particular on the occasion of the Palestinian Presidential elections taking place on Sunday, 9 January.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

The trip will start in Amman, Jordan on Sunday, 9 January and will continue to Ramallah, on the evening of the 9th and on Monday, 10 January. Mr Solana will visit Cairo on Tuesday 11, January and return for a visit in Gaza on Wednesday 12 January. The trip will end in Israel on Thursday, 13 January.<\/p><\/div>\n

The High Representative will meet the Palestinian political leaders, in particular the Chairman of PLO, Mahmud ABBAS, Prime Minister Ahmed QUREI and Foreign Minister Nabil SHAATH, as well as civil society representatives.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Javier Solana will also follow the Palestinian Presidential elections on the spot in Ramallah, where he will visit the Palestinian Central Elections Committee and a polling station as well as meet with Michel ROCARD, Chief Observer, EU Electoral Observation Mission.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

In Gaza <\/u>on 12 January he will meet Peter HANSEN, United Nations Relief and Works Agency Commissioner General and visit one of their installations.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

In Amman<\/u>, on 9 January, the High Representative will be received by His Majesty King ABDULLAH II and meet with Foreign Minister Hani AL-MULKI.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

In Cairo<\/u>, on 11 January, Javier Solana will be received by President Hosni MUBARAK. He will meet, among others with Foreign Minister Ahmed ABUL GHEIT and Amr MOUSSA, Secretary General of the Arab League.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

In Tel Aviv<\/u>, on 13 January, Mr Solana will hold meetings with Prime Minister Ariel SHARON and Foreign Minister Silvan SHALOM and other members of the government and political figures.\n<\/p><\/div>\n
