Health Action in Crises: Highlights No. 205 – 21 to 27 April 2008<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\nEach week, the World Health Organization Department for Health Action in Crises in Geneva produces information highlights on the health aspects of selected humanitarian crises. Drawing on the various WHO programmes, contributions cover activities from field and country offices and the support provided by WHO regional offices and Headquarters. The mandate of the WHO Departments specifically concerned with Emergency and Humanitarian Action in Crises is to increase the effectiveness of the WHO contribution to crisis preparedness and response, transition and recovery. This note, which is not exhaustive, is designed for internal use and does not reflect any official position of the WHO Secretariat.<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n

Assessments and Events<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

– Israel has allowed fuel to be delivered to the Gaza Strip’s main power plant, averting the possibility that it would be forced to shut down imminently. However, fuel shortages continue.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

– UNWRA has warned that its fuel supplies in Gaza are running out and that unless petrol is allowed in, it will have to discontinue food assistance to 650 000 refugees as well as the collection of garbage.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

– Fuel shortages are hampering the provision of health care in Gaza’s hospitals while attendance at out-patient-departments dropped by 29% Patients are at risk of not receiving timely diagnosis and treatment.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

– At the MoH facilities in Gaza, 13% of the drugs and 24% of the medical supplies had run out in March due to lack of financial resources.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Actions<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

– UN agencies are working together on contingency plans should the situation worsen further. Health partners are particularly concerned with maintaining access to MoH health facilities. In Gaza, WHO is involving local and international NGOs in the sector response plan.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

– WHO continues to support the procurement and transportation of drugs and supplies under the Pharmaceuticals Supply and Management System project supported by the CERF, Spain and ECHO.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

– WHO is coordinating with UNICEF to support the nutrition surveillance system to avoid overlapping of activities.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

– Recent WHO’s emergency activities have been supported by ECHO, Italy, Norway, OCHA\/Spain and the CERF.<\/p><\/div>\n
