Palestinian Presidential Elections:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

The OIC Dispatches an Observer Mission<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>Within the context of the Organization of the Islamic Conference’s contribution to strengthening Palestinian democratic institutions and enabling the presidential elections in Palestine to succeed, the Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has decided to dispatch a delegation of OIC observers to monitor the progress of the presidential elections to be held next Sunday, 9 January 2005.<\/p><\/div>\n

 <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

            The OIC mission will be leaving Jeddah for the West Bank on Wednesday to help monitor the elections. The mission—headed by Ambassador Saad Eddin Taib, Advisor to H.E. the Secretary-General—will be comprised of seven observers who will be posted across the polling stations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The Secretary-General is also dispatching Ambassador Abdulaziz Abu Ghush, the Director of Coordination with Palestine, as his special envoy on this occasion.<\/p><\/div>\n

            It is expected that the OIC delegation will be preparing a report on its observations on the progress of the election process, which it will be submitting to the Palestinian Authority as well as the member states and concerned international organizations.<\/p><\/div>\n
