{"id":207262,"date":"2003-11-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T19:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=207262"},"modified":"2019-03-12T19:20:51","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T19:20:51","slug":"auto-insert-207262","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-207262\/","title":{"rendered":"SecGen and Italian President discuss Mideast hotspots &#8211; UN News Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"4px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:12pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><strong>Annan and Italian President discuss Middle East hotspots<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:6pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><i>16 November <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><i>&#8211; <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi today discussed the troubled Middle East region, focusing on the importance of restoring calm to Iraq. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Emerging from this afternoon&#39;s forty-five minute meeting in New York, Mr. Annan said the two agreed that the international community must pool its efforts in response to the country&#39;s complicated situation. &#8220;We are convinced that a chaotic Iraq, in the middle of the Middle East, is not in anyone&#39;s interest,&#8221; he told the press. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Regarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the Secretary-General emphasized that fundamental issues must be tackled. &#8220;Obviously, I have always maintained that the best solution is land for peace, and the implementation of the UN resolutions,&#8221; he said. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">At the same time, he underscored the importance of addressing the Syrian and Lebanese tracks, while calling for a comprehensive approach. &#8220;We need to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as we work on the Iraqi crisis if we want to see peace in the Middle East.&#8221; <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">President Ciampi met with the Secretary-General following talks in Washington, D.C\/, with United States President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney. He said the earlier meetings had also touched on the need to gradually transfer sovereignty to a recognized and fully representative Iraqi government. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&#8221;It&#39;s in the interest of everybody to act as promptly as possible, because time is crucial,&#8221; he said, calling for cooperation among the Governing Council, the Coalition and the UN to achieve the goal. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">He added that this involves an &quot;enhanced political&#8230; substantial role of the United Nations.&#8221; <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Concerning the Middle East, President Ciampi said, &#8220;we agreed that a lack of resolution of this conflict in Israel and the Arab countries will engender more extremism and will fuel terrorism.&#8221; <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&#8220;We have to exert pressures with determination on both sides so that they start on the peace process,&#8221; he stressed.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Annan and Italian President discuss Middle East hotspots&nbsp; 16 November &#8211; United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi today discussed the troubled Middle East region, focusing on the importance of restoring calm to Iraq.
