UNRWA COMPLETES IMPLEMENTATION OF FAMILY HEALTH TEAM APPROACH IN ALL OF ITS HEALTH CENTRES IN JORDAN<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

UNRWA in Jordan celebrated today the closing ceremony for the full implementation of the Family Health Team approach in all of its 25 health centres.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The ceremony was held in Amman New Camp Health Centre in the presence of donor representatives, government officials, local community members and UNRWA staff.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Director of UNRWA Operations in Jordan Roger Davies said: “A number of improvements in the quality of services were observed in health centres implementing the Family Health Team approach, including a decrease in the average number of daily medical consultations per doctor, increase in consultation time, and decrease in the antibiotics prescription rate. It is a great improvement to the health service provided to Palestine refugees in Jordan.” <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

In 2012, as part of the health programme’s reform efforts to move towards beneficiary-centred approaches, the Agency adopted the Family Health Team approach for implementation in all of its health centres. This approach offers primary health-care services based on holistic care for the entire family and will help Palestine refugees to address cross-cutting issues that impact health, such as diet, physical activity, education, gender-based violence, child protection, poverty and community development. All health centres in Jordan, which collectively receive some 1.7 million patient visits each year, are implementing this approach.<\/p><\/div>\n

BACKGROUND INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions, and financial support has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, deepening poverty and conflict. As a result, the UNRWA General Fund, which supports core essential services and most staffing costs, operates with a large deficit. UNRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large deficits, are funded through separate funding portals. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.<\/p><\/div>\n
