FIRST REGIONAL CONSULTATION OF NGOs IN <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

ARAB COUNTRIES TO OPEN IN AMMAN, JORDAN<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

     Paris, 6 March – UNESCO will co-organize the first regional<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

consultation of non-governmental organizations (NGO) in the Arab<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

countries from 10 to 14 March in Amman, Jordan.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

     Intended to improve contacts between NGOs in the region and<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

better their co-operation with UNESCO as it prepares and carries<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

out its programmes, the consultation is organized in co-operation<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

with the Jordanian National Commission for UNESCO, the Queen Alia<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Fund and the UNESCO ONG Permanent Committee. It forms part of the<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Organization's efforts to decentralise and take into account<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

citizens' needs in each country. The objective is closer<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

partnership with NGOs in the fields of education, science, culture<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

and communication.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

     During three round tables, representatives of some 100 NGOs<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

with headquarters or offices in the Arab region will discuss<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

specific characteristics of the activities of associations in Arab<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

countries, their relations with the national commissions for UNESCO<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

and the Organization's regional offices, and their role in<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

informing public opinion about UNESCO objectives and programmes.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

     Participants will also examine new directives adopted by the<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Organization's 28th General Conference to diversify, revitalise and<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

reinforce co-operation between UNESCO and the NGOs. As well, they<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

will study aspects pertinent to Arab countries of the<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Organization's medium-term strategy and its 1996-97 programme and<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

budget.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

     The consultation will close with a report containing<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

recommendations to the Director-General and national commissions on<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

modalities of the NGOs' co-operation with the Organization.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

     Similar consultations have already been held for the African<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

region in Dakar, Senegal, in 1987, the Latin America and Caribbean<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

region in Quito, Ecuador, in 1990, and the Asia and Pacific region<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1994.<\/p><\/div>\n
