UNICEF welcomes Japan’s enduring commitment to Palestinian children<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

RAMALLAH, OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY, 5 March 2013 – The Government of Japan has stepped up with a generous donation of nearly 10 million USD to provide critical support to Palestinian children and women in partnership with UNICEF.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“The Japanese Government and its people are pleased to support Palestinian children, adolescents and women who live in hardship in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza,” said Mr. Junya Matsuura, Representative of Japan to the Palestinian Authority. “Our support to UNICEF also aims at enhancing human capacities to provide primary health and education services. This will serve for future generations of Palestinians,” he added.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Japanese contribution will empower UNICEF to continue to address the immediate needs of Palestinian children and women in terms of protection, education, health and nutrition, and water and sanitation.<\/p><\/div>\n

“This donation demonstrates Japan’s continued commitment to improve the lives and well-being of Palestinian children,” said Ms. Jean Gough, UNICEF-oPt Special Representative. She noted that the Government of Japan had already provided 17.5 million USD in support of Palestinian children last year, including for UNICEF’s relief work in Gaza following the recent crisis. <\/p><\/div>\n

“We are grateful to the Government and people of Japan for setting a high priority on children’s well-being”, Gough added.<\/p><\/div>\n

Children form over half of the occupied Palestinian territory’s population of nearly 4.5 million. They are among the most vulnerable to the effects of conflict.
