UNRWA RECEIVES SAUDI ARABIA’S ANNUAL CONTRIBUTION OF US$ 2 MILLION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

On 4 October, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Jordan, Dr. Sami Al-Saleh, presented United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) with the amount of US$ 2 million representing the Kingdom’s annual payment for UNRWA regular programmes in 2015.  Receiving the contribution on behalf of UNRWA, Dr. Omar Rifai, Representative of the Commissioner-General, thanked the Kingdom, noting that Saudi Arabia is first in the ranking of Arab contributors to the UNRWA regular budget and its third largest overall donor.<\/p><\/div>\n

Recently, Saudi Arabia contributed US$ 35 million in projects package in support of Gaza, West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, bringing up the total of Saudi Arabia’s contribution for the year to US$ 148.5 million. UNRWA is deeply grateful for the strong Saudi support to its role and service delivery. <\/p><\/div>\n

BACKGROUND INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions, and financial support has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, deepening poverty and conflict. As a result, the UNRWA General Fund, which supports core essential services and most staffing costs, operates with a large deficit. UNRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large deficits, are funded through separate funding portals. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.<\/p><\/div>\n
