Re-Opening of Wadi Gaza Bridge<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

At today's re-opening of the Wadi Gaza bridge, UNRWA Commissioner-General Karen Koning AbuZayd stated, “UNRWA is proud to have supported the reconstruction of this bridge. Our role is a reflection of UNRWA’s continuing commitment to improving the welfare and well-being of Palestine refugees within the broader Palestinian community.<\/p><\/div>\n

This is an important project, but it is one among many others that need to be undertaken to repair the damage done to civilian infrastructure by years of conflict. With the support of UNRWA and the international community, I hope that other reconstruction projects can be undertaken to raise the standard of living in the West Bank and Gaza.”<\/p><\/div>\n

The bridge, constructed by the Egyptian administration in 1962, was destroyed during “Operation Summer Rain" in June 2006. The 88 metre long bridge is an important transportation link, connecting the south of Gaza with the north. It is particularly vital during the winter season, when heavy rains and flash flooding make movement difficult.<\/p><\/div>\n

Reconstruction of the bridge began on 10 December 2006 and was completed in approximately 14 weeks.<\/p><\/div>\n
