Andalucía contributes EUR 1 million to UNRWA mother and child health care<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

The regional government of Andalucía has confirmed a EUR 1 million donation to support mother and child health-care services provided by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). This is the fourth consecutive year that Andalucía has helped the Agencyprovide quality and accessible family health care for Palestine refugee women and their children throughout the occupied Palestinian territory, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.<\/p>\n

“Despite a financial crisis in Spain, the government of Andalucía has again directly supported the improvement of maternal and child healthfor Palestine refugees. In this economic climate, continuing support for this important programme is a huge achievement for the people of Andalucía and evidence of their strong commitment to UNRWA’s work”, said the Agency’s director of health, Dr. Akihiro Seita. <\/p><\/div>\n

 <\/p><\/div>\n

UNRWA’s mother and child health-care initiative is part of the Agency’s wider health programme, which aims to promote long and healthy lives for Palestine refugees throughout their life cycle. It allows women to receive regular care during pregnancy and after giving birth, including antenatal care, birth assistance, post-natal monitoring, psycho-social support, and other related clinical and therapeutic services. <\/p><\/div>\n

The latest contribution marks the fourth year of the Agency’s cooperation with Andalucía, which has been the largest regional donor to UNRWA in Spain since 2010.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Parliament of Andalucía recently recognised UNRWA’s important work in an official statement by President Manuel Gracia Navarro. The Parliament agreed with a collective statement urging the Government of Andalucía “to continue supporting the humanitarian work that UNRWA performs with the refugee population, in particular its programme of mother and child health care and any other programmes of special importance to UNRWA and its target population.”<\/p><\/div>\n

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.<\/p><\/div>\n

Financial support to UNRWA has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, expanding need, and deepening poverty. As a result, the Agency's General Fund (GF), supporting UNRWA’s core activities and 97 per cent reliant on voluntary contributions, has begun each year with a large projected deficit.<\/p><\/div>\n
