EU congratulates the promoters of the signature of the Geneva Initiative<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for CFSP, congratulates the promoters of the signature of the Geneva Initiative<\/strong> <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Brussels, 1 December 2003 –<\/strong> Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, commented on the signature of the Geneva Initiative today. In a letter sent to the representatives of the Israeli and Palestinian signatories of the Geneva Initiative, respectively Mr Yossi Beilin and Mr Yasser Abed Rabbo, the High Representative congratulated the promoters of the initiative: <\/p><\/div>\n

"It takes courage and determination to seek concrete solutions to the tragic and complex Israeli-Palestinian conflict. You have worked hard and have presented a comprehensive and coherent set of proposals. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The European Union is firmly committed to the clear objective of two States, Israel and a viable and democratic Palestinian State, living side by side in peace and security, in the framework of a comprehensive peace in the Middle East, as laid out in the Quartet Road Map. There is no alternative to its swift and full implementation, in good faith by the two parties. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Geneva Initiative is a powerful example of how civil society efforts can help bring back a political perspective, invigorate public debate and show Israelis and Palestinians alike that there are partners for peace on the other side". <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Furthermore, Mr Solana assured that the European Union stands ready to further assist in promoting confidence building and the search for a lasting peace in the Middle East. He also invited Mr Beilin and Mr Rabbo to discuss these issues in Brussels. <\/p><\/div>\n
