A generous contribution of US$ 500,000 from the Red Crescent Society of the United Arab Emirates (UAERC) enabled the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to provide refugees in Gaza with food assistance, beginning in the holy month of Ramadan.<\/p><\/div>\n

The UAERC contribution helped provide food baskets containing flour, sugar, rice, oil and milk to more than 14,000 refugees from 2,500 families in Gaza. The beneficiaries, selected from among the recipients of the UNRWA Social Safety Net programme, are among the poorest of refugees. <\/p><\/div>\n

 <\/p><\/div>\n

The Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Filippo Grandi, welcomed the UAERC contribution. He said: “This contribution is welcome not only because of Ramadan, but also because it comes at a time of increasing economic difficulties in Gaza, due to the continuing blockade and the recent closure of many of the tunnels linking Gaza to Egypt.”<\/p><\/div>\n

The UAERC has been a regular supporter of UNRWA and Palestine refugees. Since 2008, the UAERC has contributed over US$ 25 million for food assistance, construction projects and medication, and has also sponsored Palestine refugee orphans in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and Syria. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.<\/p>\n

Financial support to UNRWA has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, expanding need, and deepening poverty. As a result, the Agency's General Fund (GF), supporting UNRWA’s core activities and 97 per cent reliant on voluntary contributions, has begun each year with a large projected deficit. Currently the deficit stands at US$ 58.5 million.<\/p><\/div>\n
