“The NAM caucus has decided it is going to approach the Security Council to respond favourably to the request of Palestinian Territories to visit those territories. And we would intend to go through the Security Council on the issue and we will recommend to it favourably a visit to Palestine.”<\/p><\/div>\n

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Caucus of the Security Council announced today (6 June) that it will formally request that Council members pay an official visit to the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT).<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Ambassador Abdulla Husain Haroon of Pakistan, flanked by Ambassador Mohammed Loulichki of Morocco and the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, made the announcement outside the Security Council.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Haroon said that the Caucus will recommend “favourably a visit to Palestine” hoping “to see a broader understanding on this issue.”<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

He said that the Caucus was conveying “a message of basically peace and fact finding on aspects that we would like to see for ourselves on what the situation on the ground may be in these areas.”<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Mansour, responding to a reporter’s question, said that efforts for full Palestinian membership at the United Nations (UN) were still “under consideration”.  <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

The Palestinian representative said that the timing of the request was being evaluated in an “effort for acquiring what we rightfully deserve as a member in the United Nations, including the idea of the upgrade of our status in the General Assembly.”<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n
