{"id":202723,"date":"2006-11-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T18:25:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=202723"},"modified":"2019-03-12T18:25:33","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T18:25:33","slug":"auto-insert-202723","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-202723\/","title":{"rendered":"Financial boycott sends Palestinian poverty numbers soaring, finds UN report &#8211; UN news item"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:13pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><strong>Financial boycott sends Palestinian poverty numbers soaring, finds UN report<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:7pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;padding-top:8px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><i>24 November 2006 <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><i>&#8211; <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">More than 1 million Palestinians, or one in four inhabitants of the occupied territories, are now mired in deep poverty as living standards deteriorate dramatically following the economic boycott of the Palestinian Authority this year, according to a United Nations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unispal.un.org\/pdfs\/0B3E7288DBC17B5585257233004A5202.pdf\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">report<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">released today. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">The report from the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) found that the number of people living in &#8220;deep poverty&#8221; &#8211; defined as an inability to meet basic human consumption needs &#8211; soared by 64 per cent during the first half of 2006. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">An average of 1,069,200 Palestinians now live in deep poverty, up from 650,800 in the second half of last year. Consumption has therefore slumped as well, with the purchase food down by 8 per cent and non-food products down by 13 per cent. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">UNRWA spokesman Matthias Burchard told a press conference in Geneva that the fiscal crisis in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is having a disproportionately negative effect on refugees, who are less likely to find work and more dependent on public sector jobs. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Describing the results as worrying, Mr. Burchard said the morality of the sanctions against the Palestinian Authority had to be questioned. After the victory of Hamas &#8211; which has said it is committed to Israel&#8217;s destruction &#8211; in Palestinian Legislative Council elections in January, Israel stopped handing over tax and customs revenues it collects on behalf of the Authority.
