\n\t\t\t\tJapanese Assistance for Palestine Refugees<\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

On December 17th the Government of Japan extended assistance in the amount of USD $3,160,000 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to support its: General Fund, organizational development reform efforts, and a special project to expand implementation of the “Mother and Child Health Handbook.” Details are as follows:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

(1)\t<\/span>UNRWA’s General Fund: $2,810,000<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The General Fund provides essential services in the areas of education, health, relief and social services, microfinance and micro-enterprise to Palestine refugees.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

(2)\t<\/span>Assistance for Organizational Development reform package: $250,000<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is implementing an internal reform process to improve communications and to strengthen effective management.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

(3)\t<\/span>Implementation of “Mother and Child Health Handbook for Improving Maternal and Child Health in Palestine (West Bank and Gaza)”: $100,000<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

In 2006 UNRWA implemented a pilot project, funded by the Government of Japan, to improve Maternal and Child Health Care (MCH) through the distribution of MCH handbooks. Such assistance seeks to expand distribution of the MCH handbook to all UNRWA health centers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Since the November 2007 Annapolis conference, Middle East peace talks have included discussion of core issues, including resolution of the Palestinian refugee problem. The Government o Japan actively supports the efforts of the parties concerned to settle such issues as soon as possible, since almost 60 years have passed since Palestine refugees first fled from their homes.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The Government of Japan has extended humanitarian assistance to Palestine refugees through UNRWA continuously since 1953.<\/p><\/div>\n
