The Commission on the Status of Women met today to continue its general discussion on follow-up to the Fourth World Conference on Women and the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly entitled “Women 2000:  gender equality, development and peace for the twenty-first century”.  It also held an interactive dialogue on “Equal participation of women and men in decision-making processes at all levels”.<\/p><\/div>\n

Noting that armed conflict took its toll on women on all sides of any dispute, she said women needed access to negotiation from the earliest possible stages to effectively promote their interests, including in a peaceful settlement.  Towards that end, Israeli law mandated that women must be included in any group undertaking peacebuilding negotiations.  While the existing situation was not good for either Palestinian or Israeli women, the statement by the Palestinian Minister for Women’s Affairs had conspicuously made no mention of Hamas or terrorism.  That was regrettable since ongoing terrorism impeded women’s programmes, and that issue should be addressed.<\/p><\/div>\n
