FM Livni meets with Spanish counterpart Moratinos<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni held a breakfast meeting today (Monday, 24 April 2006) with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos.<\/p><\/div>\n

During the meeting, the Israeli foreign minister praised the uncompromising position of the Spanish government regarding the fulfillment of the three preconditions that the international community has presented to the Hamas government, in return for the granting of legitimacy (recognizing Israel, ending terrorism, and fulfilling previous commitments of the PA).<\/p><\/div>\n

Livni stated that as long as the Palestinian Authority is governed by the Hamas, the international community must present a united front against it, since "a relaxed policy at this stage will hinder progress later on." She said it is possible that in the near future Hamas leaders will issue ostensibly moderate declarations in an attempt to gain legitimacy and funding.<\/p><\/div>\n

The two ministers also discussed the danger facing the world as a result of Iran's efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction.<\/p><\/div>\n

Minister Moratinos briefed his Israeli counterpart on his talks with Omar Soliman, Muhammad Dahlan, and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.
