The last of a total of 24 aid airlifts from Dubai, generously funded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, landed today at Marka International Airport in Amman. The humanitarian airlift operation which started on 21 July transported vital in-kind assistance to conflict-affected Palestinians in Gaza, in coordination with the Jordanian Hashemite Charity Organization (JHCO), and Tkiyet Um Ali. In total, 630 metric tons of assistance, containing blankets, sleeping mats, hygiene kits, kitchen sets, medical supplies and food, were received since July, with UNRWA coordinating transport and distribution in the Gaza Strip. The value of the goods donated is estimated to be a total of 7 million USD including the costs of airlifting the life-saving assistance ordered by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.<\/p><\/div>\n

During a ceremony organized at Marka International Airport, attended by representatives of the Royal Hashemite Courts (RHC), JHCO and H.E. Shaima Al Zarooni, the Chief Executive Officer of the International Humanitarian City (IHC) in Dubai, Ms. Margot Ellis, UNRWA Deputy-Commissioner General stated “We are extremely grateful to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and IHC for their tremendous support and generosity to the people of Gaza throughout the ongoing crisis. We also wish to thank His Majesty, the Army, the Royal Hashemite Courts, the JHCO and all the Jordanians involved who spared no effort to ensure efficient coordination and timely delivery of this much-needed life-saving assistance”. <\/p><\/div>\n

BACKGROUND INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Financial support to UNRWA has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, expanding need, and deepening poverty. As a result, the Agency's General Fund (GF), supporting UNRWA’s core activities and 97 per cent reliant on voluntary contributions, has begun each year with a large projected deficit. Currently the deficit stands at US$ 70.5 million.<\/p><\/div>\n
