HIKMA DONATES MEDICINE FOR GAZA<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Hikma Pharmaceuticals, the leading pharmaceuticals company in Jordan, is donating over 200,000 bottles of the antibiotic Amoxicillin, in addition to the cardiovascular medications Amlodipine and Blopress, to help Palestinians in the Gaza strip who were affected by the July-August conflict in Gaza. Donations were made by both Hikma Pharmaceuticals and its subsidiary the Arab Pharmaceutical Manufacturing company (APM).<\/p><\/div>\n

The Jordanian Hashemite Charity Organization and UNRWA transported the pharmaceuticals to Gaza in November 2014. The medication will be distributed to Palestinian refugees through the UNRWA network of health centres.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl welcomed the contribution, saying: "We are deeply grateful for the generous donation of Hikma Pharmaceuticals to the people of Gaza, who have been severely affected by the recent conflict. Hikma’s genuine commitment and invaluable support is a great example of the important contribution that the private sector is making to help Palestine refugees in need.” <\/p><\/div>\n

Hikma CEO for the Middle East and North Africa and Emerging Markets Mazen Darwazah added: “As a leading pharmaceutical company, we are committed to improving people’s lives, especially those in need living in dire conditions. With the severe shortage of medicines in Gaza, we hope that our contribution will assist in alleviating the suffering of our people there, as we value the work done on the ground by UNRWA in Gaza.”<\/p><\/div>\n

BACKGROUND INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Financial support to UNRWA has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, expanding need, and deepening poverty. As a result, the Agency's General Fund (GF), supporting UNRWA’s core activities and 97 per cent reliant on voluntary contributions, has begun each year with a large projected deficit. Currently the deficit stands at US$ 56 million.<\/p><\/div>\n
