UNRWA APPEALS FOR 55 MILLION DOLLARS FOR EMERGENCY NEEDS<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Beirut, Monday 10<\/u><\/strong><\/span>th<\/u><\/sup><\/strong><\/span> <\/u><\/strong><\/span>September, 2007:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency today appealed to international donors for 55 million dollars to fund the first year of rehabilitation and emergency assistance to refugees from the Nahr el Bared refugee camp in northern Lebanon. Launching the appeal, UNRWA estimated that a high percentage of the camp’s infrastructure had been “put out of action” by fierce fighting raging since the third week of May. The Commissioner General of UNRWA, Karen AbuZayd, joined the Lebanese Prime Minister, Fouad Siniora in launching the multi-million dollar appeal in Beirut on Monday.<\/p><\/div>\n

“Under this Emergency Appeal, UNRWA is seeking almost 55 million dollars for one year, to meet the emergency needs of the affected population and to plan for a full and safe return for those displaced from the Nahr el Bared camp”, said AbuZayd. “The appeal includes provisions for temporary shelter via rental assistance, construction of temporary shelters and support to host families, infrastructure, including water and sanitation, temporary employment, as well as basic services including humanitarian assistance, health care and education for the coming year”, she said.<\/p><\/div>\n

The action plan will be carried out through UNRWA and its partners, including the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the UN Department of Safety and Security, the International Labour Organization, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the United Nations Population Fund, the Government of Lebanon and NGOs. <\/p><\/div>\n

In a further phase, UNRWA intends to develop a comprehensive reconstruction plan in co-operation with the Lebanese Government, the World Bank, UN Agencies, PLO, NGOs and the Palestinian community. “UNRWA has again proved it is capable of adapting to volatile and unpredictable environments, but we still have much work ahead of us in building lives and supporting those who have been touched by the conflict,” said AbuZayd. “The return to Nahr el Bared camp affords an opportunity for the Lebanese communities to come together and realize they have been adversely affected by this conflict and must support each other in the healing process and rebuild their community.”<\/p><\/div>\n
