Alexander Saltanov, Special Middle East Envoy of the President of the Russian Federation and Deputy Foreign Minister, Holds Talks with a Delegation of the Palestinian Hamas Movement<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\nConsultations took place at the Russian Foreign Ministry on February 26 between Alexander Saltanov, Special Middle East Envoy of the President of the Russian Federation and Deputy Foreign Minister, and a delegation of the Hamas leadership headed by the movement's Political Bureau Chairman Khaled Mashaal. During the exchange of views, the situation in inter-Palestinian relations, progress in the formation of a Palestinian government of national unity in the light of the accord reached recently in Mecca between Fatah and Hamas as well as the prospects for the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli political settlement were discussed in detail. <\/p><\/div>\n

There was reaffirmed on the Russian side the position in favor of the achievement of an inter-Palestinian consensus with due regard to the well-known criteria of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators and restoration of the Palestinians' peace dialogue with Israel on an international legal basis. The Hamas delegation highly rated the contribution of Russia to efforts for creating a Palestinian national coalition government, establishing an all-embracing peace and security in the Middle East and reaffirmed the commitment of its movement to the Mecca Accord. <\/p><\/div>\n
