Kuwait joins UNRWA’s Advisory Commission<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Kuwait has been invited by the General Assembly of the United Nations to join the Advisory Commission of the United Nations Agency for Relief and Works of Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The invitation was delivered to HE Dr Hamad Al Duaij, Ambassador of Kuwait in Jordan, by Mr Peter Ford, Representative of the Commissioner-General of UNRWA.<\/p><\/div>\n

Kuwait becomes the second Arab donor country to join the Advisory Commission after current Chair, Saudi Arabia. The invitation to Kuwait followed the donation by the Amir of Kuwait, HH Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah, of US$ 34 million to UNRWA in 2009 in response to the Gaza emergency.<\/p><\/div>\n

Welcoming Kuwait’s membership, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Mr Filippo Grandi, said: “I am delighted to see Kuwait become the second Arab donor member of our Advisory Commission, and would hope to see more Arab countries join. Kuwait has been a consistent supporter of UNRWA for many years, and through the Amir’s very generous contribution, in addition to a recent increase in its annual contribution to US$ 2 million it has qualified itself as a major donor. We look forward to working with Kuwait to provide humanitarian support to Palestine refugees and thus to enhance regional stability.”<\/p><\/div>\n

\nBackground information<\/strong><\/span>
\nUNRWA provides assistance, protection and advocacy for some 4.7 million registered Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the occupied Palestinian territory, pending a solution to their plight. The Agency’s services encompass education, health care, social safety-net, camp infrastructure and improvement, community support, microfinance and emergency response, including in times of armed conflict. <\/p>\n

UNRWA is funded almost entirely by contributions from States. The Agency’s core budget for 2010-2011 stands at $1.23 billion. In 2009, emergency appeals for the West Bank, Gaza and Lebanon amounted to $827.4 million.

الكويت تنضم للجنة الاستشارية للأونروا<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

عمان: تمت دعوة دولة الكويت من قبل الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة للانضمام لعضوية اللجنة الاستشارية لوكالة الأمم المتحدة لإغاثة وتشغيل اللاجئين الفلسطينيين في الشرق الأدنى (الأونروا). وقد تم تسليم الدعوة لسعادة الدكتور حمد الدعيج سفير دولة الكويت لدى الأردن من قبل السيد بيتر فورد ممثل المفوض للأونروا.<\/p><\/div>\n

وتصبح الكويت بذلك ثاني دولة عربية مانحة تنضم لعضوية اللجنة الاستشارية بعد المملكة العربية السعودية الرئيس الحالي للجنة. وتأتي دعوة الكويت للانضمام في أعقاب تبرع سمو أمير الكويت الشيخ صباح الأحمد الصباح بمبلغ 34 مليون دولار للأونروا في عام 2009 وذلك استجابة للوضع الطارئ في غزة.<\/p><\/div>\n

وفي معرض ترحيبه بعضوية الكويت في اللجنة الاستشارية، قال فيليبو غراندي المفوض العام للأونروا "أشعر بالسرور لرؤية الكويت تصبح ثاني دولة عربية مانحة في عضوية اللجنة الاستشارية، وآمل أن أرى المزيد من البلدان العربية تنضم للجنة. لقد كانت دولة الكويت وما تزال داعما قويا للأونروا طيلة سنوات عديدة، ومن خلال التبرع السخي لسمو الأمير علاوة على الزيادة الأخيرة لتبرعها السنوي ليصبح 2 مليون دولار، فقد استحقت دولة الكويت لتكون من كبار الدول المانحة. إننا نتطلع للعمل مع الكويت من أجل تقديم الدعم الإنساني للاجئين الفلسطينيين وبالتالي تعزيز الاستقرار في المنطقة".<\/p><\/div>\n
