USAID contributes $3 million to WFP emergency appeal<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\nTEL AVIV –<\/strong> The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has donated more than $3 million to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in response to an emergency appeal for support to Palestinians affected by the current conflict. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The donation of $3,125,000 brings to more than $25 million the funds USAID has spent since 2002 to help feed the most vulnerable, non-refugee Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. This year's caseload numbers 480,000 people.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

USAID also assists Palestinian refugees through its substantial contributions to UNRWA. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

WFP's latest emergency appeal totaled $41 million. The UN agency will use the USAID funds to purchase locally produced olive oil and locally milled wheat flour – thus giving a major boost to the Palestinian economy. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The northern West Bank produces large quantities of olive oil. By funding the local purchase of olive oil, USAID is also assisting poor farmers who have difficulty getting their oil to market because of movement restrictions caused by military operations. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

USAID funds will also be used to purchase locally milled wheat flour for distribution throughout Gaza, where aid groups face difficulty bringing humanitarian supplies into the conflict zone. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
