\n\t\t\t\tThis Final Report summarises the activities carried out by the United\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tNations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tEast (UNRWA) that were funded under the Emergency Appeal for\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tNorthern Lebanon (September 2007-August 2008). This appeal was\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tlaunched in response to the major humanitarian crisis that occurred in\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tNahr el-Bared Palestine refugee camp (NBC) during the summer 2007.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tOn 20 May 2007, fierce fighting between the Lebanese Armed Forces\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\t(LAF) and the radical group Fatah Al-Islam (who were using the camp\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tas a base) erupted in NBC, 20km north of the city of Tripoli. The conflict\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tquickly turned into a three month siege of the camp that forced the\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\trefugee inhabitants of NBC and its adjacent areas to flee to safety, most\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\ttaking refuge in Beddawi camp near Tripoli. Initial estimates indicated\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tthat around 31,000 Palestine refugees (5,449 families) were displaced\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tas a result of the massive artillery and aerial bombing campaign. The\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tfigures were later revised to 27,000 refugees or 5,553 families who\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\twere affected by the crisis. Among them, 1,264 refugees were able to\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\treturn to the adjacent areas after October 2007, but remained in need\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tof humanitarian support.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tThe conflict left the camp in ruins and schools, health clinics and relief\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tservices offices in the UNRWA compound were also destroyed, as were\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tmany residential and commercial properties owned by both Lebanese\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tand Palestinians in the adjacent areas located outside of the official\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tcamp boundaries.  While the fighting was still raging, a large-scale humanitarian\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\temergency operation was organised to support the thousands of\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\trefugees fleeing the camp. UNRWA was the lead agency for these\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\toperations with coordinated support from the UN Resident Coordinator,\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tthe UN Country Team, the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement as\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\twell as local and international NGOs.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
