The General Assembly had before it the Secretary-General’s <\/span>note<\/u><\/span> (document <\/span>A\/67\/300<\/u><\/a>), which notified Member States of matters related to the maintenance of international peace and security that were being dealt with by the Security Council.  Delegates were also to discuss the <\/span>report on the work of the Security Council<\/u><\/span> (document <\/span>A\/67\/2<\/a>) and address the question of equitable representation on that body and increase in its membership.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Introducing the annual report of the Security Council<\/u> (A\/67\/2), HARDEEP SINGH PURI ( India<\/u>), the current Council President, said presentation of the annual survey was “more than a regular reporting exercise” pursuant to the United Nations Charter.  Indeed, the report underscored the importance of the relationship of both principal organs of the Organization – the Council and the General Assembly – and provided an excellent opportunity to debate and exchange views with the general membership on the Council’s work.<\/p><\/div>\n

JULIO EXCALONA ( Venezuela<\/u>) associating with the Non-Aligned Movement, said that the Council continued to adopt resolutions beyond the role given it by the Charter, thus violating the principles of democracy at the heart of the Organization.  Further, some of the Council’s resolutions violated the sovereignty of States by imposing models of development and Government that had not been chosen by their peoples.  In addition, the Council’s report did not treat the situations in the Palestinian Occupied Territory and Syria fairly.  … <\/p><\/div>\n
