{"id":199505,"date":"2011-07-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T17:47:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=199505"},"modified":"2019-03-12T17:47:45","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T17:47:45","slug":"auto-insert-199505","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-199505\/","title":{"rendered":"Norway upgrades Palestinian representation in Norway &#8211; Foreign Ministry of Norway &#8211; Press release\/Non-UN document"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\"><strong>Palestinian ambassador to Norway<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>On 18 July 2011, Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr St&#248;re and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas signed an agreement on upgrading Palestinian representation in Norway.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Mr St&#248;re commented, &#8220;This reflects the progress towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian state that we have seen under the leadership of President Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Under the agreement, which will enter into force immediately, the Palestinian representative will have the rank of ambassador. The Palestinian representation will now be called &#8220;the Palestinian Mission&#8221;, instead of the former designation &#8220;the Palestinian General Delegation&#8221;. It will now represent both the PLO and the Palestinian Authority (PA). The Palestinian representation has already enjoyed diplomatic privileges on a par with the representation of other countries to Norway. <\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Support for Palestinian institution-builing has been a main priority for the international donor community since the Oslo Accords in 1993. The objective has been to support negotiations on a two-state solution and lay the foundation for the formation of a Palestinian state.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">As chair of the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee for Assistance to the Palestinians (AHLC), Norway has a key responsibility for coordinating these efforts.
