PRRO 10387.0 – Protracted Relief Operation for Non-Refugee Palestinians<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Under the PRRO, WFP supports over 650,000 of the most vulnerable and food-insecure non-refugee population in the West Bank and Gaza who have been affected by a steady decline of living standards.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

• While sufficient resources are available for programming to ensure a full pipeline in the next three months, donors are encouraged to continue funding this project in a timely manner to ensure an economic recovery is given the best chance possible.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

• Funding is adequate for the remainder of 2007, and into the first two months of 2008. However, the project is only 43 percent funded for the duration.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

• According to a WFP Food Security assessment carried out in October 2007, wheat prices increased by 40 percent from June to September 2007. Bread, the staple food of the poorest population, has increased by 20 percent; rice has increased in price by 15 percent per bag since June 2007.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

• After almost five months of tight Israeli restrictions, supplies of basic food and other basic commodities are running very low. Stocks of items such as fruit juice and cleaning products are depleted in many places and the population is heavily affected by shortages of books, clothes, spare parts and other items. Proposed fuel and power cuts to Gaza will continue to erode what remains of a once-thriving economy.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

• The PRRO has three fundamental components: (i) protracted and emergency relief; (ii) recovery through support for productive activities and skills development; and (iii) enhanced knowledge, partnerships and advocacy. Of the 665,000 targeted beneficiaries, including 90,000 schoolchildren, 43 percent will be assisted through relief interventions and 57 percent through recovery activities.<\/p><\/div>\n

• Full rations will be provided for people entirely dependent on assistance; reduced rations will go to beneficiaries with limited resources. The PRRO will emphasize self-reliance through productive activities: food-for-work and food-for-training will concentrate on creating conditions for increased productivity and generating employment; food-for-education will contribute to skills development.<\/p><\/div>\n
