{"id":199111,"date":"2006-09-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T17:43:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=199111"},"modified":"2019-03-12T17:43:35","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T17:43:35","slug":"auto-insert-199111","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-199111\/","title":{"rendered":"Egyptian Foreign Minister urges comprehensive approach to achieve Middle East peace UN news item"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><strong>At UN, Egypt urges comprehensive approach to achieve Middle East peace<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:5pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;padding-top:7px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:7pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><i>22 September 2006 <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><i>&#8211; <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, the Foreign Minister of Egypt has stressed his country&#8217;s role in calming tensions between Israel and Palestine while calling for a comprehensive approach to achieving peace in the Middle East. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;padding-top:9px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">Ahmed Aboul Gheit <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/webcast\/ga\/61\/pdfs\/egypt-e.pdf\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><u>said<\/u><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">&nbsp;on Thursday that the recent war in Lebanon, in addition to causing untold devastation, has demonstrated that military might cannot impose a political solution. &#8220;It has also proven that the solution lies in ending the occupation and in negotiating a just political settlement that will eliminate the feelings of enmity and replace them with relations of cooperation and peaceful co-existence,&#8221; he said. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">He welcomed the adoption of Security Council resolution 1701 ending the war in Lebanon, but said this first step in the right direction &#8220;will remain incomplete and will not enjoy success without dealing with the core of the conflict in the region, namely the Arab-Israeli conflict.&#8221; Warning that this conflict &#8220;carries the seeds of a conflagration that could go beyond the region,&#8221; he called for global efforts to address its root causes. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">For its part, he said Egypt is working to improve the security situation between the Palestinians and the Israelis &#8220;through direct engagement with both parties.&#8221; <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">The Foreign Minister also spoke directly to the citizens of Israel. &#8220;We assure the Israeli people that there is a path other than that of violence and counter-violence, and that the Arab world is ready to accept them as neighbours an a part of the region within a comprehensive peace agreement that transcends the suffering of the past, preserves the interests of the peoples of the region and assures Arabs and Israelis of a life in safety, security and cooperation.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At UN, Egypt urges comprehensive approach to achieve Middle East peace&nbsp; 22 September 2006 &#8211; Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, the Foreign Minister of Egypt has stressed his country&#8217;s role in calming tensions between Israel and Palestine while calling for a comprehensive approach to achieving peace in the Middle East.
