2,499 REFUGEE FAMILIES RECEIVE SUPPORT FOR RENTAL SUBSIDIES AND REINTEGRATION GRANTS<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

US$ 1.46 million in funding made available for outstanding rental subsidy payments (US$ 556,900) to cover the period from September to December 2014 and US$ 500 reintegration grants to replace lost household goods (US$ 909,500) will reach 2,499 refugee families across the Gaza Strip. The families can access this assistance through local banks.<\/p><\/div>\n

This week’s assistance adds to the US$ 180,000 that has been disbursed last week for outstanding rental subsidy payments to cover the period from September to December 2014 and has reached 195 refugee families.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Emergency shelter – including support for home repairs, reconstruction and interim shelter solutions – is a top priority for UNRWA. The Agency remains committed to supporting affected families yet requires new funding to continue the shelter cash assistance programme.<\/p><\/div>\n

BACKGROUND INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions, and financial support has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees and deepening poverty. As a result, the UNRWA General Fund, which supports core essential services and most staffing costs, operates with a large deficit. UNRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large deficits, are funded through separate funding portals. <\/p><\/div>\n

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.<\/p><\/div>\n
