On mission to Lebanon, Mr. Jan Top Christensen, Head of the Department for Humanitarian Affairs and Civil Society Cooperation at the Royal Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited UNRWA Field Office in Lebanon on 9 March, where he was briefed by Mr. Richard Cook, the Director of UNRWA Affairs in Lebanon on the progress of UNRWA’s work under the Early Recovery Plan and the Camp Improvement Initiative.<\/p><\/div>\n

Mr. Christensen toured Shatila camp in central Lebanon, accompanied by Mr. Danny Annan, First Secretary at the Danish Embassy in Lebanon and senior staff from UNRWA. The visit was an occasion for Mr. Christensen to view firsthand the living conditions of Palestine refugees in Lebanon, who have been beneficiaries of Danish Government assistance for years.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Danish Government has contributed around US$ 2 million to UNRWA’s Early Recovery Plan and Camp Improvement Initiative. The funds were allocated to several projects aimed at assisting the Palestinian community to recover from the 2006 summer war and to improve humanitarian conditions for the community. The Danish contribution served to repair and reconstruct a number of shelters in Saida, and to upgrade the Siblin Training Centre and dispensaries at health centres. Cash assistance was also provided to refugees affected by the war and part of the donation funded needs assessment studies in the camps in preparation for future improvements.<\/p><\/div>\n
