Minister for Development Co-operation pledges further support for humanitarian relief and recovery in Lebanon and Palestine at Donor Conference in Stockholm<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nMinister of State Conor Lenihan, T.D, is today representing Ireland at a donor conference in support of recovery in Lebanon. The conference is hosted by Sweden, in close cooperation with the Government of Lebanon and the United Nations. \n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Minister, along with other donor countries, will be briefed by Prime Minister of Lebanon, Mr. Fouad Siniora, and UN Emergency Relief Co-ordinator, Jan Egeland, on the humanitarian situation and efforts on recovery and reconstruction. \n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Ireland has already provided €2 million in support of relief efforts in Lebanon and Gaza since the onset of the current crisis. Minister Lenihan will today pledge a further €2 million in support of ongoing humanitarian and recovery needs in Lebanon and Gaza. \n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Minister Lenihan will stress that all parties must commit themselves to the vision set out in Resolution 1701, and to a peaceful future for Lebanon and its neighbours.\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Speaking in Stockholm, Minister Lenihan said: \n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“Ireland responded quickly to the crisis in Lebanon by providing €1.3 million to UN Agencies, the Red Cross and NGOs since the onset of this current crisis.  Ireland has also responded to the crisis in Gaza, where humanitarian needs are great and where the situation is extremely challenging. Ireland will pledge today a further €2 million over two years for emerging humanitarian relief and recovery needs in Lebanon and Palestine.”<\/p><\/div>\n

Today's pledge will bring to €4 million the funding announced in support of Lebanon and Palestine since the onset of the current crisis. Ireland has to date allocated €1.3 million to Lebanon and €700,000 to Gaza. This funding has been disbursed to UN Agencies, the Red Cross and NGOs which are providing essential services on the ground. This funding is additional to Ireland's programme humanitarian and development assistance to Palestine in 2006 which will exceed €4 million. <\/p><\/div>\n
