BIZKAIA REGIONAL GOVERNMENT MAKES ITS THIRD CONTRIBUTION
\nTOWARDS FOOD ASSISTANCE FOR PALESTINE REFUGEES IN SYRIA<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

The Bizkaia Regional Government has donated EUR 115,000 (US$ 150,000) to support internally displaced Palestinian refugees who are food insecure in Syria. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA will use these funds to distribute food to approximately 4,225 families. Each food parcel aims to cover one-third of the daily food needs of each family member, and contains rice, lentils, oil, milk, pasta and other goods.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

By fleeing conflict in Syria, many Palestinian refugees have also been forced to abandon jobs, farms and livelihoods. Family savings and assets have been all but exhausted. Their uncertain economic situation, combined with shortages of food in markets, has forced many people into food insecurity. The continued support of partners such as the Bizkaia Regional Government is essential to allow UNRWA to maintain urgently required assistance for these vulnerable people. <\/p><\/div>\n

The ongoing conflict in Syria is one of the greatest challenges faced by UNRWA in its 64-year history. Almost all of the 540,000 Palestine refugees from Syria registered with UNRWA require assistance. Approximately 270,000 Palestine refugees have been internally displaced within Syria. <\/p><\/div>\n

BACKGROUND INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Financial support to UNRWA has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, expanding need, and deepening poverty. As a result, the Agency's General Fund (GF), supporting UNRWA’s core activities and 97 per cent reliant on voluntary contributions, has begun each year with a large projected deficit. Currently the deficit stands at US$ 56 million.<\/p><\/div>\n
