In Lebanon, UN envoy urges authorities to maintain recent lull along withdrawal line<\/strong><\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

23 April<\/i><\/span> <\/i><\/span>– <\/i><\/span>The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Terje Roed-Larsen, today urged senior Lebanese officials to make all efforts to maintain the welcome lull in clashes along the line marking Israeli withdrawal. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

According to a UN spokesman, Mr. Roed-Larsen made his comments in Beirut during talks on the deteriorating situation in the region with Lebanese President Emile Lahoud and Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Later, Mr. Roed-Larsen held talks in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa on ways to halt the cycle of violence in the Middle East, the spokesman reported. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The UN envoy briefed the Syrian officials on the alarming humanitarian situation in the West Bank and answered questions about his recent experiences at the Jenin refugee camp.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n
