\n\t\t\t\tTaking on the challenge <\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t“The European Union is facing a crucial period. Together we must deal with the economic crisis and unemployment, but also unite the world to tackle climate change. The Swedish Presidency is ready to take on the challenge.” Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt <\/i>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tEuropean cooperation has seldom been more important than it is today. We live in a time when the world around us is rapidly changing and where major common challenges <\/strong>must be dealt with globally and regionally. The EU is removing barriers and creating possibilities. We need to work together for a Europe <\/strong>that takes responsibility <\/strong>for economy<\/strong>, welfare<\/strong>, environment<\/strong>, security <\/strong>and peace<\/strong>. EU cooperation must be developed where it provides added value.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tSweden will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union during the second half of 2009. The Swedish Presidency’s vision is a strong <\/strong>and effective Europe <\/strong>where focus is on the common responsibility to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow, including preparedness to manage crises.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t2. The EU as a global actor<\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\tStrengthened cooperation and political role in the world<\/i>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t… <\/span>Priority will be given to the situation in the <\/span>Middle East <\/strong><\/span>and an active EU role in the peace efforts. The work for a two-state solution – with a Palestinian state and an Israeli state living in peace with each other – and respect for obligations under international law are paramount.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
