UNRWA AND TIKA SIGN AGREEMENT FOR DONATION OF PROSTHETIC DEVICES IN JORDAN<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

The Director of the Operations in Jordan for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Roger Davies, and the Coordinator of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) Office in Jordan, Mohammad Siddik Yildirim, signed today a Memorandum of Understanding for the donation of prosthetic devices to UNRWA in Jordan.<\/p><\/div>\n

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Yildirim said: “The TIKA office has been opened recently in Amman. The office will follow up on the implementation of Turkish technical aid and grant programmes in Jordan and ensures Turkey’s support for the implementation of some projects. As for UNRWA, we are pleased to partner with the Agency for the best interest of Palestine refugees in the country.”<\/p><\/div>\n

Thanking the TIKA Coordinator, Mr. Davies said, “It gives me great pleasure to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with TIKA in Jordan, which is hopefully the first step in a long partnership. Beneficiaries who will get the devices have been waiting to get a prosthetic device for a while and now they can get back part of their mobility again relying on the devices.”<\/p><\/div>\n

The provision of prosthetic devices to vulnerable Palestine refugees with disabilities complements the Agency’s efforts in helping Palestine refugees achieve their human development potential and ensuring their engagement to improve their families’ living conditions with dignity by eliminating some of the barriers that limit the full and active participation of persons with disabilities in society. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

TİKA<\/u><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

TIKA is an international development agency under Republic of Turkey  Prime Ministry to focus on development collaboration. TIKA works in 140 countries, including the ones where their offices are located since 1992. Turkey shares its knowledge and experience through TIKA, with many countries from the Pacific to the Central Asia, from the Middle-East and Africa to the Balkans and from Caucasia to South America.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

TIKA carries out the task of being a cooperating mechanism for the state institutions and organisations, universities, non-profit organisations and the private sector. In addition, it functions as a platform for these actors to come together and it records the development aid carried out by Turkey. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

BACKGROUND INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is confronted with an increased demand for services resulting from a growth in the number of registered Palestine refugees, the extent of their vulnerability and their deepening poverty. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions and financial support has been outpaced by the growth in needs. As a result, the UNRWA Programme Budget, which supports the delivery of core essential services, operates with a large shortfall,  projected for 2016 to stand at US$ 96.5 million. UNRWA encourages all Member States to work collectively to exert all possible efforts to fully fund the Agency’s Programme Budget. UNRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large shortfalls, are funded through separate funding portals.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. UNRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, protection and microfinance.<\/p><\/div>\n
