Prime Minister Göran Persson's comments on the Israeli elections on 28 March<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

"Israel is both a country of deep democratic traditions and one that throughout history has suffered acts of violence and terrorism. Yesterday's elections once again demonstrated the strength of democracy," says Prime Minister Göran Persson today in a comment on the elections in Israel on 28 March. <\/p><\/div>\n

"Although voter turnout was somewhat lower than normal, the election gave a clear result that I hope will soon be translated into the formation of a stable government. In times of uncertainty, not least in relation to the Palestinians, there is a need for political clarity and responsibility in Israel. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

"It is important that the newly elected Palestinian and Israeli governments, as soon as they have been installed, make every possible effort to reach a peaceful and sustainable solution to the conflict. The past few years have not been easy. There is currently a climate in which we may see an increasing number of unilateral actions on the part of Israel. That is why I attach importance to the statement by Ehud Olmert after the election victory that agreement will be sought with the Palestinians and that there is a preparedness for compromise." <\/p><\/div>\n

"Sweden and the EU will continue their efforts to contribute to a solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Our demands on the parties, based on international law, remain unchanged. <\/p><\/div>\n
