REFUGEE FAMILIES IN GAZA RECEIVE PAYMENTS FOR RECONSTRUCTION, REPAIR WORKS AND RENTAL SUPPORT<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA disbursed over US$ 1.46 million for reconstruction (~US$ 1 million) and severe repair works (~US$ 464,200). The funds reached a total of 299 refugee families across the Gaza Strip. They were able to access their assistance this week.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

In addition, UNRWA is paying approximately US$ 4.5 million for the third quarter of rental subsidy payments, covering the period from July to September 2016. The funds are reaching almost 6,500 refugee families across Gaza. The Agency is paying the third quarter transitional shelter cash assistance to all eligible refugee families.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Emergency shelter – including support for home repairs, reconstruction and interim shelter solutions – is a top priority for UNRWA. The Agency remains committed to supporting affected families yet requires new funding to continue the shelter cash assistance programme.<\/p><\/div>\n

BACKGROUND INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is confronted with an increased demand for services resulting from a growth in the number of registered Palestine refugees, the extent of their vulnerability and their deepening poverty. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions and financial support has been outpaced by the growth in needs. As a result, the UNRWA Programme Budget, which supports the delivery of core essential services, operates with a large shortfall. UNRWA encourages all Member States to work collectively to exert all possible efforts to fully fund the Agency’s Programme Budget. UNRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large shortfalls, are funded through separate funding portals.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. UNRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, protection and microfinance.<\/p><\/div>\n
