{"id":195631,"date":"2002-07-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T17:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=195631"},"modified":"2019-03-12T17:02:54","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T17:02:54","slug":"auto-insert-195631","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-195631\/","title":{"rendered":"High-level meeting on technical assistance to Pal. workers held in Geneva &#8211; UN news item"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" background=\"#000000\" width=\"100%\" style=\"text-align:left;margin-left:initial;margin-right:auto;\">\n<tr>\n<td width=\"100%\" valign=\"top\" style=\"border-color:#000000;border-style:solid;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;border-left-width:0px;border-right-width:0px;\">\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:14pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><strong>In talks with Palestinian officials, UN labour agency advances jobs plan for Middle East<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;padding-top:8px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><i>12 July <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><i>&#8211; <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">The head of the United Nations labour agency held talks in Geneva today with a senior Palestinian delegation aimed at advancing plans to create jobs in the Occupied Arab Territories, which have seen skyrocketing rates of unemployment amid the current tense security situation. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Urgent plans for technical assistance, especially the establishment of a Palestinian Fund for Employment and Social Protection, were high on the agenda during discussions among the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Juan Somavia, the Palestinian Minister of Labour, as well as officials representing employers and workers. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Samir Radwan, Mr. Somavia&#39;s Special Adviser on Development Policies and the Arab World, said today&#39;s meeting was the culmination of the agency&#39;s long commitment to improving conditions for workers in the region. &quot;The ILO has been giving a lot of priority to this issue &#8211; we&#39;ve been doing an annual report on the situation for 18 years &#8211; but this year the situation is very special,&quot; he told the UN News Service, noting that the unemployment rate among Palestinian adults hovers around 78 per cent.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">In addition to agreeing to create the Fund, the officials also concurred on the need for &quot;some emergency schemes, because the situation cannot wait until the Fund is set up,&quot; explained Mr. Radwan. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">He added that today&#39;s discussions also addressed fostering a dialogue aimed at helping Palestinians return to work in Israel.
