Presidency Statement on recent events in Jericho and Gaza <\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

  <\/p><\/div>\n

The Presidency is gravely concerned at the events that took place on 14 March 2006 in the West Bank, especially in Jericho, and in Gaza. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Presidency stresses the need to take the appropriate measures to restore calm and order. It calls upon Israel and the Palestinian Authority to exercise restraint and to weight carefully the impact of their actions in order to prevent further escalation. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Presidency strongly condemns the taking of hostages and calls upon the Palestinian Authority to ensure the protection of foreign nationals and property.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Presidency remains in close contact with all concerned parties in order to monitor the situation closely.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n
