The Palestinian people have demonstrated a clear<br \/>\ncommitment to determine their political future via democratic means. These elections saw<br \/>\nimpressive voter participation in an open and fairly-contested electoral process that was<br \/>\nefficiently administered by the independent Palestinian Central Elections Commission.<br \/>\nThe successful holding of these elections is an important step in strengthening Palestinian<br \/>\ndemocracy and implementing Palestinian Roadmap obligations.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">The European Union appreciates measures taken by Israel to facilitate the holding of the<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">PLC elections, including in East Jerusalem.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">5738\/05 (Presse 28) 2<br \/>\nEN\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">The European Union stands ready to continue to support Palestinian economic<br \/>\ndevelopment and democratic state building. At the same time, the European Union expects<br \/>\nthe newly elected PLC to support the formation of a government committed to ending<br \/>\nviolence, a negotiated solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the rule of law, reform,<br \/>\nand sound fiscal management. The European Union welcomes President Abbas&#39;<br \/>\ncommitment and leadership in this regard.
