Switzerland calls for the respect of the law in view of the deteriorating situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory<\/strong><\/span>

\nThe Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is following with concern the deterioration of the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. It strongly condemns the kidnapping of a Swiss ICRC delegate in the Gaza Strip and of other persons, and demands their immediate release. It also strongly disapproves of the operation launched by the Israeli armed forces against the Jericho prison in the West Bank. The DFA appeals to all parties to end the violence and to refrain from any action which contravenes international humanitarian law.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

The DFA is dismayed by the news of the kidnapping of several people today, Tuesday, by non-identified armed men in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. A Swiss delegate of the ICRC is among those who were captured in the Gaza Strip. The DFA is in close contact with the ICRC and, via its representative in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, with the Palestinian Authority. The DFA is monitoring developments in the situation on a permanent basis. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

The DFA considers that, regardless of the reasons for carrying it out, the operation conducted against the Jericho Prison in the West Bank contravenes the obligations of the occupying power and violates the principle of proportionality. The DFA recalls the mandatory character of the standards of international humanitarian law, in particular, that the physical integrity and the legal protection of the individuals against whom this action is aimed must be fully ensured in all cases and at all times. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n
