The United Arab Emirates Ministry of International Cooperation and Development (MICAD) on Monday 21 July provided a donation of $15 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to distribute desperately needed food-aid to Palestine refugees who continue to suffer the worst effects of Syria’s civil war, now in its fourth year.<\/p><\/div>\n

Her Excellency Shaikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al-Qasimi signed into agreement the generous donation which will allow UNRWA to provide food-aid for over 360,000 Palestine refugees most in need across Syria. The Commissioner General of UNRWA, Pierre Krähenbühl, applauded the contribution from MICAD saying: “The Commissioner General of UNRWA, Pierre Krähenbühl, applauded the contribution from MICAD saying: “This $15 million donation from UAE through MICAD is extremely welcome, and comes as a timely reminder of the continued war in Syria. UNRWA continues to operate wherever Palestine refugees are in need, and the situation for those Palestine refugees in Syria remains as desperate as ever.”<\/p><\/div>\n

BACKGROUND INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Financial support to UNRWA has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, expanding need, and deepening poverty. As a result, the Agency's General Fund (GF), supporting UNRWA’s core activities and 97 per cent reliant on voluntary contributions, has begun each year with a large projected deficit. Currently the deficit stands at US$ 68 million.<\/p><\/div>\n
