  Before moving on from the chapter on peace and security, I want to thank the Secretary-General for his overview of developments in various areas of tension throughout the world where the United Nations is present in one way or another. I want also to say that at a time when there has been progress in the situation in some of those areas, it is frustrating to note that in the Middle East there has been a serious deterioration in the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories. The peace process remains blocked, and the <\/span>Mitchell report<\/a> cannot even be implemented owing to the policies and practices of the Tel Aviv Government. While our appreciation goes to our wise Secretary-General for his efforts to help resolve the crisis, we stress the need for action by the international community towards resuming negotiations between the parties. We also reaffirm the urgent need for a comprehensive, just and lasting solution of the Middle East conflict on the basis of Security Council resolutions <\/span>242 (1967)<\/a> and <\/span>338 (1973)<\/a> and on the basis of the principle of land for peace. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

  We endorse the view of the Secretary-General, expressed in his report, regarding the deterioration of the situation in the Arab countries and the need to find a just, lasting and comprehensive solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict on the basis of the relevant decisions taken by the United Nations. The spiral of violence in the Arab region is the result of the Zionist military occupation of Palestinian land for more than 34 years. The occupying forces have attempted to expropriate more land and expand existing settlements; to destroy Palestinian infrastructure; to humiliate and subjugate the people; to impose collective sanctions on them; to uproot trees; and to assassinate Palestinian symbols of legitimate resistance.<\/p><\/div>\n
